The Solution to WordPress 3.5 Add Media Button not Working

Like others, I too upgraded my WordPress Installations to 3.5 with a hope to get a new experience of Media Uploads. On some of the installtions it worked fine, but on Biharprabha News,  it started causing issues.

The Add Media button on the Top of Text Editor didnot render the popup when it was clicked. The same was case with Set Featured Image, which too rendered a popup earlier. If you too face the same problem, here is a quick solution to this.

Add following lines to wp-config.php file.

define(‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false );

Make sure you add this just before these lines

require_once(ABSPATH.’wp-settings.php’);

In my case the issue was resolved after adding this. If you face the problem even after trying this, do let me know by commenting below.

For setting Featured Image, it is possible to Open the Link in a New Tab and set the Featured Image, but for adding any image to the content there is no workaround

Five Rare tricks to win the Search Engine Optimization Race

I was busy past  few days  in boosting the traffic of my website news.biharprabha.com. Thanks to SEO, the number of visitors per day  increased by 500 %  in past 30 days.  Search Engine Optimization has become a very broad term now. Unlike past , where it was limited to the  on-page optimization  and off-page optimization, it has accumulated the feathers of Social Media.

I am sharing few of the strategies  that I used to achieve this feat. This is applicable to any content centered websites like  news, blogs or forums.

1.  Meta Keywords: Just Google for Search Engine Optimization and you  will get lots of results. Remember, the best firm will definitely appear on the top of Search Results for this query. Take the top 5 websites (other than Google) appearing in the search Results and analyse their code. You will find extra Meta Entries for most of them. Include them in all of your pages.

2.  Keyword   Make sure the keyword you are targeting appears in the <TITLE> of your page and inside <Hn> tags   inside the  <BODY>  of the page. Lower the value of <H> you provide, higher weight would the keyword gains w. r. t. that page. So ensure that the target keywords appears inside <H1> or <H2> tags.

Use the formula below for <H> density

Maximum  number of <Hn>= 2^(n-1)  where n=1,2,3,4,5,6

It means  never keep more than 1 <h1> tags or more than 2 <h2> tags. Doing so may invite suspicion on part of Search Engines and impact your reputation.

3: Frequency: The Crawl rate of Search Engines is directly proportional to the frequency at which new content is being added to your website. So instead of adding 5 pages/day  at a time  it is better  to add one page at the interval of every four hours.

4. Duplicate Content: This is the  most controversial  topic in the SEO domain. The impact of keeping Duplicate content varies from  site to site. If the same content appears on Times of India and on Hindustan Times website, both will appear in the search results without any harm done to any of them. But, if a small website copies the content from Times of India,, it will not get any benefit for sure. Google or any search Engine can easily identify  and devoid it of any benefit in the search Results. For  start-up websites or blogs, keep a balance between Duplicate and Original Content. If you are posting duplicate content, make sure that it is beneficial to the readers and proper credits have been given to the owner of the content.

As a thumb rule:

1. Copy in parts  and not in whole.
2. Copy but not cheat.

5. Social Media: Though  officially not stated by Google , but  it has been observed that any page  shared  multiple times  on Facebook and Twitter gains some advantage in terms of SEO. Make sure that all your contents are promoted to Twitter and Facebook whenever they are published.  Use RSS Graphiti app for automatically sharing your posts to Facebook. For Twitter, use Wp-to-Twitter plugin for immediate tweeting upon publication of new posts.

 

These tricks are based on my own experience of Search Engine Optimization. Always remember that

SEO doesnot mean fooling the Search Spiders.
It is like putting your best foot forward.
Never try to cheat the  Search Spiders.

How beautifully they SPAM in India ?

Every morning I get an unsolicited email from www.mydala.com offering me a Samsung Galaxy for Rs 99 and as usual  I have to trash it out.

At the footer, there exists an interesting legal disclaimer

Disclaimer: Since India has no anti-spamming law, we follow the US directive passed in Bill 1618 Title III by the 105th US Congress, which states that mail cannot be considered spam if it contains contact information, which this mail does.

FYI  never signed up on Mydala.com or subscribed to their mailers. Infact the first time I paid a visit to this site was today and  that too for unsubscribing from its mailer.

 

Now several questions cascade in my mind

1.  Does this law give someone  the right to pick my email address at random and bombard me with worthless marketing promotions? In US this law came to effect in 2003 See Here, but was never enforced. This law is also known as ‘You-can-SPAM ‘ act providing a legal umbrella to the spammers.

2. How does a law in United States give the legality to SPAMMING in India? Put in other terms, someone can  organize Live Pornography in India, just because it is legal in some countries.

3. The law says that it requires a Physical Address, Email Address and Phone Number for transmission on unsolicited commercial material. Since this email had no physical address, so it fails to abide by even the US which it claims so far.

4. It contained a phone number +91-11-43444444 as contact option. How can I remain assured that the sender is the legitimate holder of this phone number (just to ensure that it fully abides by so called US Anti-Spam Laws)?  Of Course, I am not going to call this number  and waste my money

This way, can I legalize any SPAM email by putting any fake contact options in it.

 

4. What if I pick up the emails of every Who’s Who of Mydala.com  and send this email with the same disclaimer?

 

While I refer here to Mydala.com, I have been constantly victimized by many other similar mailers in the category of Retail, Deals, and Jobs. Even well known portals like BharatMatrimony.com continue to SPAM even after multiple un-subscription request.

Thanks to Gmail’s Anti SPAM technology which prevents 90% of SPAM from featuring in my inbox. And I follow a strict practice of reporting such mailers as SPAM to the Gmail Team.

 

The question is do we need a Anti-SPAM Law like in US. If such a law comes, can it be enforced properly. Would it be effective enough as envisaged?

Or, do we require a regulation like Do- Not- Disturb Service as in  SMS Marketing?

4. Click next and Confirm that you want to enable 2-Step Authentication.

You need to provide this code once every 30 days while logging in. Google will remember it for next 30 days. If you are using a different computer, then you require this code.

If not, then dont get disheartened.I started my first website on a free domain itself.

There are only 2 reliable free domain services on the web, CO.CC and DOT.TK. While both are completely free services, CO.CC has been recently banned by Google.While in future, this ban is likely to be lifted, I strongly advice you to book a .tk domain. This is because it is a TOP Level domain while CO.CC is 2nd level domain. DOT.TK provides unlimited domains, while CO.CC limits this to 3 per account.

Amazon Vitual Private Cloud comes out of beta

Amazon Web Services has just rolled  the Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) out of  its beta . It is now available globally on Pay-as you- go  model.It is equipped with new enterprise capabilities for dedicated networking and identity management. These new capabilities are designed to support the security, network management, dedicated connectivity and access control requirements of enterprises when deploying mission critical applications in the cloud.

In an email Amazon says

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud is now out of beta and is generally available in multiple Availability Zones in all AWS Regions (US East, US West, EU, Singapore, and Tokyo.) Using Amazon VPC, you can provision a private section of the AWS cloud where you can a create virtual network that you control, including selection of IP address range, creation of subnets, and configuration or route tables and network gateways. You can connect your Amazon VPC directly to the Internet while also extending your corporate data center to the cloud using encrypted VPN connections.

With today’s global rollout of Amazon VPC, you can:

 

  • Provision multiple VPCs to support different use cases, for example, a production network, a staging network, and a development and test network.
  • Launch Amazon EC2 instances into subnets in different Availability Zones to protect applications from failure of a single location
  • Connect branch office locations to each other and to your Amazon VPC via encrypted VPN tunnels.

Apple goes into Cloud introduces ICloud

Apple Inc. (AAPL) Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, by introducing a service that shares files across different Internet-linked devices, takes another step toward sidelining the personal-computer industry he pioneered.

Jobs, who helped popularize home computers with the Apple II and the Mac in the 1970s and ‘80s, is counting on the new iCloud product to let users synchronize and access data on Apple devices and Windows PCs running iTunes.

Jobs aims to make Apple the center of consumers’ digital lives, further decreasing dependence on Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s once- dominant Windows software and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ)’s market- leading PCs. With iCloud, files will be stored by Apple in remote data centers — known as the “cloud” in technology parlance — and automatically synchronize. That means the same content is available from any Apple gadget, without it cluttering up users’ hard drives.

“The PC will be the most visible casualty of the cloud revolution,” said Steve Perlman, a former Apple engineer and the CEO of online game company OnLive Inc. “Apple knows it.”

Apple is trying to parlay the success of the iPhone and iPad into the leading role in the “post-PC” era. Already, customers have bought 25 million iPad tablets, eating into PC sales. Both Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard disappointed investors with their earnings last quarter, hurt in part by tablets weighing on the industry.

‘Demote the PC’

In all, Apple has sold more than 200 million iOS devices, a category that includes the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, the Cupertino, California-based company said yesterday when it unveiled iCloud. Apple’s App Store now has more than 425,000 applications that work with iOS.

“We’re going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device — just like an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod Touch,” Jobs, dressed in a black sweater and jeans, said yesterday. “We’re going to move the hub of your digital life to the cloud.”

Apple recently completed a $1 billion data center in North Carolina that will serve as the backbone of the iCloud service. It will help devices synchronize calendar items, contacts, mail, iTunes songs, photos, apps and other files.

“If you don’t think we’re serious about this, you’re wrong,” Jobs said while showing pictures of the data center. Yesterday’s event marked Jobs’s second public appearance of 2011. Though he has been on medical leave since Jan. 17, Jobs remains involved in Apple’s decision making. His absence is the third since 2004 as he copes with a rare form of cancer.

Amazon, Google

In racing to the cloud, Apple is competing with Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), the biggest online retailer, and Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android software, which runs rival smartphones and tablet computers.

Amazon is the top seller of e-books, and offers its own cloud service. Google’s Android, meanwhile, runs smartphones from Samsung Electronics Co., HTC Corp. and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. Android accounted for 36 percent of smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2011, compared with 17 percent for iPhone, according to Gartner Inc.

A major piece of Apple’s effort to dislodge the PC is eliminating the need for customers to plug their devices into a computer for updates. With the software upgrades announced by Apple yesterday, devices will synchronize wirelessly. For example, a picture that’s taken with an iPhone will become immediately available to view on an iPad or Mac.

“Keeping these devices in sync is driving us crazy,” Jobs said yesterday.

Closed Ecosystem

The various Internet services Jobs introduced will only work with Apple’s mobile devices. That improves the chance customers will stay within its ecosystem of gadgets and services, saidGene Munster, an analyst for Piper Jaffray Cos. in Minneapolis.

“Apple is increasing the likelihood that consumers buy multiple Apple devices,” he said in a note to clients.

At the same time, Apple’s closed approach presents an opportunity for rivals, including Google and online file-storage service Dropbox Inc., said Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce.com Inc. in San Francisco, which offers cloud services to businesses. Those competitors can offer services that will work with different platforms, not just Apple’s, he said.

Apple fell $5.40, or 1.6 percent, to $338.04 yesterday on the Nasdaq Stock Market, mirroring a broader decline in the markets. The shares have climbed 4.8 percent this year. Today, the stock dropped 0.7 percent to the equivalent of $339.58 in German trading as of 9:14 a.m. in Frankfurt.

As part of iCloud, Apple introduced a $24.99 music feature called iTunes Match that will scan every song in users’ libraries and match it with a copy in the cloud. That means customers don’t have to upload all their music song by song — a requirement on services introduced by Google and Amazon.

ICloud will be available as a free download when Apple releases the new version of iOS this fall. The feature will include 5 gigabytes of free storage for users’ files, plus unlimited room for purchased apps and books, and recent photos.

The new version of iOS will come with a notification system to alert users when they get text messages and updates from applications such as Facebook. It also will make it easier to see Web articles and save them for future reading.

A new Twitter Inc. partnership will help users access the social-networking service and post photos. And a feature called Newsstand lets customers purchase and organize newspaper and magazine subscriptions for the iPad and iPhone.

New Features

Apple also is adding 250 new features to the Mac OS X Lion software, including more touch-control options and a service called AirDrop that shares files over Wi-Fi. The Lion operating system will be available for downloading in July for $29.99.

The company’s earlier foray into Web-based services, MobileMe, got off to a slow start, dogged by breakdowns, including one that kept users from sending or receiving e-mails. MobileMe, with a $99 annual subscription fee, eventually gained 3 million users, according to Forrester Research Inc. That’s a fraction of the potential customer base for iCloud.

“We learned a lot,” Jobs said yesterday. MobileMe “wasn’t our finest hour.”

Facebook Questions- A smart way to increase the popularity of page

How does Questions work?

Questions is designed so that anyone on Facebook can help you find the answer. For example, when you ask a question and your friends answer or follow, their friends can see and answer it, too.

Brands and businesses are looking for ways to leverage Facebook’s recently unveiled Questions tool in ways that differ from what they’re already doing on Q&A sites such as Quora, Yahoo Answers and LocalMind.

The feature, which Facebook rolled out to all users March 24, functions as a recommendation engine. It also presents a major opportunity for businesses to conduct market research and crowdsource in a far more elegant way than was previously possible, according to Ben Grossman, communication strategist for marketing agency Oxford Communications.

“We know from Nielsen that recommendations from friends and family and the opinions of online strangers are the top two most trusted forms of advertising,” Grossman told Mashable. “Facebook Questions offers the perfect opportunity for brands to tap into exactly that.”

Brands, businesses, groups and organizations can then use Questions in several ways. For example, Grossman said:

Mashable: How is Facebook Questions different than the Q&A tools already online?

Grossman: Though Questions certainly falls into a similar category as Yahoo Answers and Quora, there are two very major differences:

  • Answers to questions are not free-form; users are limited to multiple-choice responses.
  • Questions (and their answers) are not catalogued by search engines at this time. Public Q&A sites like Yahoo Answers and Quora will still remain important for public-facing customer support and inquiries.

Mashable: How will Facebook Questions change the way users of Facebook Pages interact with their fans? Why is this important?

Grossman: Though third-party Facebook application development companies such as Involver and Wildfire have developed turn-key “poll” applications, many users were likely to get hung up on that pesky “Applications Permissions” box that demands access to users personal information.

Questions changes that. No permissions are required, and the Questions platform lets you answer and talk about questions with all your friends no matter if they’ve engaged with a third-party application before or not.

The other great thing about Questions is it comes with a setting that allows users to add more answers to the multiple-choice answers. This bit of flexibility will really and truly allow businesses to learn from their consumers — they just have to know the right questions to ask.

Questions also demands a higher level of fidelity to opinion statistics for brands. If brands bind themselves to the Questions platform to pose questions and they relate to the brand’s business, it’s going to be a lot clearer to all the fans what public opinion is. If the brand doesn’t follow through by acting on that opinion, Questions has a nice comment area that gives fans the perfect place to call a brand out on it.

Mashable: How have you or Oxford used Facebook Questions so far? How do you plan to use the feature in the future?

Grossman: Oxford Communications decided to test out the functionality and float this question out to our fans:

Within 15 hours, we had engaged 13% of our fanbase and had not only gained votes on answers we had given to the question; we also had fans suggesting (and voting for) new answers, including local couponing sites, LiveTVChat and more. For us, it was an opportunity to enjoy a high level of engagement with our followers, emerge as a thought leader and learn a little all at the same time.

The next frontier, after some additional testing, will be to activate Questions on behalf of our clients. Next month, we are planning on extending Legends Outlets Kansas City’s “Charity Check-In” program through use of Facebook Questions. On Legends Outlets Facbeook Page, Legends Outlets is currently encouraging its consumers to check-in with Facebook Places in order to trigger the brand to donate $1 to a pre-determined, local Kansas City charity.

Next month, the brand will be doing the same, but we will also be employing Facebook Questions to ask the fans what charities they would like to see appear as part of the ongoing Charity Check-In program. We’re excited to help Legends Outlets partner with the charities that mean the most to its fans, while raising their friends’ awareness of ways they can give back to the community.

Mashable: What was your initial reaction to the new Facebook Questions tool?

Grossman: Any time Facebook adds a new standard application to all user and business profiles, I get excited. When Facebook adds major new functionality like Questions, it stands to shift the social dynamic of over 500 million people, creating richer, more diverse and increasingly dynamic conversations.

Beyond the impact it will have on users, the widespread release of Facebook Questions is also emblematic of the continuing trend we’ve seen from Facebook: As soon as a new trend in social media begins to rise up, Facebook acts quickly and decisively. For those long-time Facebook users out there, Questions will hearken back to the days when Polls were far more common on Facebook. But this round of Q&A-based functionality released by Facebook is likely more of a direct response to the increasing popularity of up-and-coming sites like Quora and LocalMind.

What I love about Questions is how true it is to Facebook’s zeal for transparency and trust.
